The Out of Bounds Ensemble was founded in 2007 in order to bring new and established contemporary chamber music to a wider audience. Pianist and music theorist Tomoko Deguchi, building on years of experience performing contemporary music, forged the ensemble by bringing together founding members Ronald Keith Parks and Craig Bove (composers), pianist and composer Leonard Mark Lewis, and conductor Geoff Whitehead. Soon after becoming established the Out of Bounds Ensemble was appointed as New Music Ensemble in Residence at Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC.
Since its inception the Out of Bounds Ensemble has presented numerous concerts in the Carolinas, and beyond. OBE has joined forces with the Bechtler Ensemble (Ensemble in Residence for the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte) on several occasions for both performances and recording sessions. OBE has been joined in concert by numerous eminent area guest musicians.
In addition to bringing established music of the 20th and 21st centuries to concert going audiences in the Carolinas an beyond, OBE has premiered numerous new works written for them. Examples include Go Pops! by Leonard Mark Lewis, Things Get Out of Hand by Ronald Keith Parks, and Resignation-Moment-Sublimation by Craig Bove. Additionally, OBE has hosted student composition contests and has performed winning entries on OBE concerts.
The ongoing mission of the Out of Bounds Ensemble is to present professional-quality performances of established, seminal chamber works of the 20th and 21st centuries and to commission and perform new chamber music. Follow our blog for details on upcoming performances and events.
